28 days of eating high fat, moderate protein and VERY low carb, resulted in numerous benefits: a 14 pound weight loss, improved mood and cognition, and a decrease in hunger/cravings to name a few. For the 1% who may just be catching up, be sure to check out why I’m doing this experiment, the post which recapped my first week of ups and downs, the magical effects of the keto diet, and drinking on Keto from last week. The last 28 days have really taught me a lot about this eating plan and I’m glad I made this change to my lifestyle in an effort to share the results with all of you. From my month of trying out the Keto diet, I have three major takeaways that I wanted to share at the conclusion of this successful experiment:
1. It Is Incredible What You Can Accomplish In Just One Month
Part of my goal with documenting the journey with plenty of daily updates was to make a point for my followers - all it takes is some hard work and dedication to realize pretty powerful results. After attaining these types of results in one month, imagine what can be done in 60 or 90 days! While I had great results with this way of eating, it may not be for everyone - this is why I always recommend either researching on your own or working with a professional to determine the right plan for you!
2. Patience Is Paramount
The first week of this eating plan was really tough - I had headaches, cravings, and my gym stamina took a big hit. Fast forward two weeks, my gym performance was back to normal and I felt pretty good. I think all too often, we start out on a diet or a change in eating habits, only to run out of patience and wonder why our abs aren't showing up 3 days into the program. If you are following the program, eating and drinking what you are supposed to, the results will come.
3. Fat Can Be Your Friend
Many people getting started on a Keto plan don’t consume enough fat, and actually consume too much protein. My first week took some adjustment and getting used to, but I used a few supplements to help me hit my daily fat target. The one that is gaining a lot of steam in mainstream eating is MCT oil. It has a whole host of benefits. During my Keto journey, I started off everyday with MCT oil and a scoop of collagen in my coffee. This provided plenty of energy to power me through my workout. If you don’t know what MCT oil is, it stands for Medium Chain Triglycerides. My favorite maker of supplements, Dr. Anthony Gustin (Equip and Perfect Keto) has a great article about MCTs here.
So… what’s next? Check out my video from last week where I describe what I’m planning to do next. Be sure to follow me and stay tuned for updates on Facebook, Instagram, and right here at www.performingnutrition.com!
Until next time, catch me in the comments!
